Integrated-Circuit Manufacturing Capabilities
Quick Facts
- We own and operate four wafer fabs and five test facilities worldwide. In May 2007, we acquired a fifth wafer fab which is located in Irving, Texas. We are also a partner with Seiko Epson Corp. at their fab in Sakata, Japan.
- We run over 160 different integrated circuit processes—the industry's broadest range of analog and mixed-signal IC process technologies.
- All of our wafer fabs and test facilities are ISO certified* and TS 16949 certified**.
- Over 90% of our ICs were manufactured and tested in our own facilities in fiscal year 2008.
- Our products are extraordinarily reliable, achieving a failure rate of 0.49 FITs (failures per 109 device hours).
- We use more than 250 package types to meet customer needs for analog performance, size, cost, and reliability.

Competitive Advantages of Owning Our Manufacturing Facilities
Why do we own and operate our own semiconductor manufacturing facilities?
Our process development resources are tightly focused on high-performance analog and mixed-signal processes. While most of the industry's process development is targeted at fitting more ones and zeros on a chip, Maxim specializes in developing the industry's best analog and mixed-signal processes. We have created processes no one else has to satisfy our customers' demands for the tightest tolerances, lowest noise, highest voltage and current capability, greatest integration, and other characteristics critical to tomorrow's analog and mixed-signal solutions.
We control every aspect of fabrication and manufacturing, resulting in higher quality. Since initiating a transition from outside fabs to our own facilities in 1990, we have experienced a five-fold improvement in reliability, achieving a rate of 1.2 FITs or better for the last 10 years. Because we own our fabs, we can implement greater quality controls and respond immediately if problems occur. Feedback and correction are entirely in-house.
We control our supply chain. Outside organizations do not dictate our manufacturing schedules or costs. Maxim has exclusive use of four of the industry's best analog foundries. No other company can affect our capacity at these facilities. Ownership also provides flexibility—we continually optimize our product mix to best serve our customers' forecasted needs, respond to changes, and maintain our commitment to achieve the lowest manufacturing costs.

Manufacturing Partnership Between Maxim and Seiko Epson Corp.
Maxim's partnership with Seiko Epson Corp. (PDF, 83kB) provides manufacturing of Maxim parts at Epson's state-of-the-art 200mm fab located in Sakata, Japan. This alliance gives Maxim upside capacity and ensures enhanced quality and service for Japanese and Asian Pacific customers.
* Except for the San Antonio, Texas wafer fab, which has had its ISO 14001 registration date extended until production ramp-up is reached. ** ISO certification for the Irving, Texas fab will occur when the facility goes into production.
