Pin-Compatible Family of 170Msps-to-250Msps 12-/10-/8-Bit ADCs have the Industry's Best Dynamic Performance

SUNNYVALE, CA-August 11, 2004-Maxim Integrated Products (NASDAQ: MXIM) introduces a state-of-the-art, high-performance family of pin-compatible 12-bit, 10-bit, and 8-bit analog-to-digital data converters (ADCs). The 8-bit and 10-bit ADCs are available in speed grades up to 250Msps while the 12-bit ADC is initially available at a speed of 170Msps.

This family of high-performance ADCs includes the MAX1213 (12-bit, 170Msps), MAX1122 (10-bit, 170Msps), MAX1123 (10-bit, 210Msps), MAX1124 (10-bit, 250Msps), and MAX1121 (8-bit, 250Msps). These converters offer exceptional dynamic performance at high input frequencies. They provide unmatched dynamic performance, including signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), spurious-free dynamic range (SFDR), and intermodulation distortion (IMD). They consume the lowest power in the industry.

The 12-bit MAX1213 offers a SNR of 65.5dB that remains flat (within 1.5dB) up to 250MHz input frequency. The MAX1213 also has an industry-leading noise power ratio (NPR) of 62dB, which is better than the closest competitor by 3dB and consumes 30% less power.

At the 10-bit level, the MAX1123 delivers an exceptional SNR of 57.5dB that remains flat (within 1.5dB) up to 500MHz input frequency, more than 2dB higher than the competition. This superior dynamic performance is even more remarkable given the low power consumption of less than 500mW at sample rates up to 250Msps, an industry first.

At the 8-bit level, the MAX1121 delivers a SNR of 48.8dB (2.8dB better than the competition) and a SFDR of 68dBc (8dB better than the competition). Differential nonlinearity is similarly impressive at +0.1LSB.

The combination of high-IF dynamic performance and high sample rate allows the user to select receiver architectures that can sample large bandwidths while eliminating intermediate, RF downconversion stages. This design flexibility reduces system cost and complexity, and saves board space.

The MAX1213/MAX1122/MAX1123/MAX1124/MAX1121 are ideal for applications such as cable and cellular infrastructures, broadband-communication systems, instrumentation, and high-performance video equipment.

These devices are available in a space-saving 68-pin QFN-EP package specified for the extended temperature range (-40 degrees Celsius to +85 degrees Celsius). Prices start at $23.85 (1000-up, FOB USA). An evaluation kit is available to speed designs.
